A medium-size oak tree up to 67 feet tall. A trunk that is 2 feet in diameter. It has a beautiful broad rounded crown.The bark is dark brown to light gray. It develops shallow fissures on older trunks. The leaves are elliptical, 2-5 inches long, and highly variable. They often have several shallow lobes or teeth toward the tip. They are thick and leathery, with distinct raised veins on the underside. The tree is semi-evergreen. New leaves in the spring are peach-colored!There is only one native U.S. population in Val Verde County, Texas. But this tree is naturally widespread in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. The species grows in a variety of habitats. It is found from 1300 feet to 6900 feet in elevation. This tree will grow almost anywhere - wet or dry - cold or hot!Quercus polymorpha is now widely available from nurseries and it is widely planted as an ornamental. We recommend it - especially in drier locations. But it will grow almost anywhere - wet or dry! Try it. You will like it. Only recently discovered in the U.S. in 1992 as a native tree in Val Verde County, Texas, but is now widely available in commercial nurseries.
