The Bur Oak is big. Really big.

Quercus macrocarpa

The Bur Oak is a large deciduous tree that grows 100-160 feet tall. It is one of the most massive oak species with a trunk diameter of up 10 feet. It is also one of the slowest-growing oaks with a growth rate of about 12-18 inches per year. A 20-year-old tree will be about 60 feet tall if it’s grown in full sun. Naturally occurring saplings in forests will typically be older. Bur oaks commonly reach 200 to 300 years old, and may live up to 400 years.

They are a wonder shade tree.

It lives from Texas, throughout the central United States, all the way to southern Canada. Bur Oaks have even been planted in Anchorage, Alaska.

The bark is gray with distinct vertical ridges.

The leaves are recognizably different from other oak trees. They are quite large at 3–6 inches long and 2–5 inches wide. Their shapes vary. Most often, the two-thirds of the leaf that is closest to the stem is narrower, while the furthest third is wider and has shallow lobes. They are a beautiful dark green.

Bur Oak acorns are the largest acorns of any oak species! The acorns are 1–2 inches long and up to 1.5 inches wide. They have a large cup that wraps much of the way around the nut.

If you want a very large oak tree that can live in cold or warm coastal climates this is it! It is majestic and gorgeous.
